Welcome to the Circus … Entry Price – Your Own Risk

I have to say. Everything seems very different at home. I decided to disappear from Falmouth for a little bit and touch base. The atmosphere is strange. It feels like warning signs are everywhere. I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned, but another life has been taken from the community, in the same kind of way. Drugs. How many more lives is it going to take, for the reality of things to sink in? Two people. Two whole lives. Taken. For the sake of recreational high. Those people had so much potential, so much life ahead of them. It’s such a waste. But this won’t stop, not now. More & more people die everyday. Whether it’s disease, suicide, old age, accidents, murder, indirect self-infliction: drugs, poverty, eating disorders, sacrifice. There are a million causes of death. But some go beyond the ‘unnecessary’ mark.

At a young age, it’s inevitable to feel invincible. You feel energized, free, empowered, immortal. But that doesn’t stop anything from taking life out of your hands. Our bodies, they’re our shells, protecting the organs that let us breathe air and consume food. The clothes we wear are another layer of protection, one reason fashion is so important. Does that mean fashion, or death?
Our heads & our hearts guiding us through life, the two inevitable paths we take in every situation that arises. Do we do the right thing, or what makes us happy? Our souls, our personalities, what makes us unique from every other human being; holding our opinions, voice, potential, intelligence and emotion.

One wrong move, one twist of fate, could it all be over for someone? Yes. We can be as reckless as we like, we have the ability to take our lives, but some could argue we don’t have the right. But in reality, if we can do it, what’s stopping anyone? Fear of death? Fear of hurting? Fear of humiliation of not being able to cope? Fear of having to cope if it doesn’t work?

Deep, huh?

An annoying phrase from a wannabe Kanye West, or one of the most profound things our generation have ever come across? Some use this phrase as an excuse to get fucked off their face and make a complete fool out of themselves for night. Some use it as an excuse to do something they probably shouldn’t, something risky, that makes you feel alive. Some use it as a reason to treat themselves, indulge in something they can’t REALLY afford, all for the thrill.

THRILL.
INDULGE.
RISK.
NIGHT.
ALIVE.
TREAT.
AFFORD.

Welcome to the circus.
Enjoy the THRILL of doing something extreme.
INDULGE in colour, atmosphere, and fun.
Entry price: your own RISK.
Sleep through the day, perform tricks all NIGHT.
Forget about death, feel ALIVE.
TREAT yourself to the lifestyle of a lifetime.
Can you AFFORD to fall into the trap?

This is what’s inspiring this project. Charlie Barker & Georgie Boxall died from taking a drugs. Drugs are a risk, as much as walking a tight rope, hanging from the ceiling with only fabric to balance on, breathing fire, & twisting your body into a knot. Some people get out alive, some don’t.

Watch. This. Space.

I have a lot to say, a lot to prove, a lot to do, and a hell of a lot of awareness to raise.

Please Listen

My friend Charlie died a few weeks ago. His funeral was yesterday. My next project will be bigger than ever, it’s going to become an event. I am hoping to work with Trudy and friends of his for ideas, and help on the project. We want to raise money for a charity, probably Surrey Street Angels, and raise awareness for the dangers of recreational drugs (like Trudy says in this interview, not to stop people from having a good time, but to make them think twice before they do something).

This project will be a tribute to Charlie. I don’t want to gain any money, I just want to do something that grabs people’s attention, show people that there’s a lot to lose, but I want Charlie’s life to inspire the project. I think street art & the whole skating scene will be a theme that is the main influence.

Calm.

HOW NICE IS THE WEATHER AT THE MOMENT?! So happy Spring has finally come!

Photo

So after spending some time grieving for dear Charlie, I have spoken to some old friends from back home who are willing to work with me on the project. After the funeral I am going to pitch the idea to his lovely Mum, and ask if she wants to work with us as I’d love for her to be involved.

But for now I’ve got a challenge to finish my yoga wear for my current uni project and even though I had that awful ‘oh god i’m so behind’ feeling for the majority of this week, I’ve also been getting on with all of my work. All I have to do is get the final designs done on the figure, get the clothes sewn together as I spent today cutting the patterns for it, and get my photoshoot done as we’re collaborating with the fashion photographers as part of our professional practice! I’m actually really excited, the photographers I’ve got are lovely, have some amazing ideas and I am buzzing to work with them!

Here’s what I have so far…

Image

A page from my sketchbook, this is the spa that I chose to design the yoga wear range for as they would be ‘introducing yoga to the spa’ as part of the brief. I was really inspired by the vivid colour palette, and the location (Africa) is so beautiful. It tied in well with my (well thought through) customer profile, as she’d have a severe case of wanderlust and want to travel to amazing places, have a really relaxed and enjoyable life etc.

As I said with the previous jeans project, you need the 5 C’s of good pre design. I have my climate, my customer profile, I just needed my concept, colour palette and cloth.

I follow a series of blogs, facebook pages, tweeters, instagrammers who are more obsessed with what they do than I probably am, and I always find their work absolutely STUNNING.

I found this one artist who I follow on Facebook, I think the story was that I was on the bus home from town, I was scrolling up and down my newsfeed on the Facebook app, and the artist had posted an illustration of a flamingo for a Special K campaign, and the caption was ’balance’, as soon as I saw that, it was like my whole project concept had just written itself, it fit in perfectly with the theme of yoga, and also I wanted to have it inspire my colour palette too, as I’m ALWAYS going for neutral, subtle colours, this time I wanted something bright and beautiful which also tied in well with the climate and place I was designing for.

So I did my own interpretations (no where near as good as the above illustration but I thought I’d give it a go!)

I prefer the ink one. Anyway. I now had to get on and buy my fabric.

I bought these from the Berwick Street Cloth Shop, Berwick Street, London while I was at Fashion Week. I struck a deal with my Mum, as she bought the fabric, I promised I’d make the clothes for her! But it’s all really excited me and now I want to keep them! But I’m sure she’ll get more use out of them than I will, afterall, she did spend a fair amount on the fabric!

Finally, today, I cut the patterns for the vest top and baggy yoga pants that I’m so excited to start overlocking together (maybe – if it goes well).

I have to get these up to a really good standard of making, which if I’m honest, hasn’t been my strongest point over the last few projects, but I’m sure I can make something work! I also made a tiny crop top out of the sheer orange stretch fabric (as it’s slightly more see-through) – which I actually got discounted as there were tears in the fabric, but I thought, hey, I’ll have extra if things go wrong, and spare for next time if it’s all good! But I didn’t really need to make a pattern for it as it was a pretty simple cut!

In the end I decided to cut two of these little orange crop tops, one plain with a round finish at the bottom which I’m going to baby-lock, and the other with the tears in to give it a more stylish approach, as it could easily be a design feature!

And there you have it, I’ll get on the making and I’ll post several images on here tomorrow, also see things happen on twitter/instagram – same username for both, please follow @imogenfuchsia to see the updates on my personal and work life combined!

Peace out!
